2026’s Biggest Web Design Trends (and Which Ones Actually Suit a Small Business)
Every year around this time, the trend reports start flooding our feeds. This year it’s Squarespace’s turn, and their 2026 design trends have design nerds (us included) very excited: Archival Index, Glassmorphism, Motion Narrative, Creative Process, Card Play. Five names that sound like art exhibitions.
Here’s the thing we tell clients every single time one of these reports drops: a trend isn’t a strategy. Some of these will genuinely suit your business. Others will make you look like you’re trying too hard. So let’s break them down in plain English and talk about which ones are actually worth your time.
The Trends, Translated
Archival Index: think moodboard-meets-magazine. Grid layouts, lots of white space, a curated ‘gallery’ feel. Great for anyone with a portfolio or a story to tell in stages.
Glassmorphism: frosted glass panels, soft blur, layered depth. Sleek and futuristic. Best suited to modern, tech-forward or design-led brands.
Creative Process: hand-drawn marks, scanned textures, deliberately unpolished. The opposite of AI-perfect, and that’s exactly the point.
Motion Narrative: subtle animation that guides the eye down the page, telling a story as you scroll rather than dumping it all at once.
Card Play: bold, tactile, stacked card layouts. Playful, punchy, great for brands with a lot of offers or personality to show off.
Which Ones Are Actually Worth It For You
We see this all the time: a business owner falls in love with a trend because it looks amazing on someone else’s site, and then it fights their brand the whole way through. So before you chase any of these, ask one question: does this help the person on the other end understand what I do, faster?
If you run a service-based business and people need to trust you quickly (tradies, consultants, coaches), Archival Index or Motion Narrative usually win. They build credibility without slowing anyone down. If you’re a creative or a maker, Creative Process is a gift; it lets your personality do the selling for you. Glassmorphism and Card Play are fun, but they need a steady hand. Go too far and your site stops feeling like you and starts feeling like a template.
The Thread Running Through All of It
Look closely and every single one of these trends is chasing the same thing: texture, movement, imperfection. A human touch. We wrote about this a few months back in The AI Poster Trap, as AI-generated content floods every feed, the businesses that feel handmade are the ones people trust. This year’s trend report is basically the design world agreeing with us.
You don’t need all five trends. You need the one or two that make your site feel more like you, not less. That’s the brief every single time.
